Mississippi State Representive, Bubba Carpenter, a Republican, had this to say while speaking to the Alcorn County GOP:

"We have literally stopped abortion in the state of Mississippi. Three blocks from the Capitol sits the only abortion clinic in the state of Mississippi. A bill was drafted. It said, if you would perform an abortion in the state of Mississippi, you must be a certified OB/GYN and you must have admitting privileges to a hospital. Anybody here in the medical field knows how hard it is to get admitting privileges to a hospital...

 

"It's going to be challenged, of course, in the Supreme Court and all -- but literally, we stopped abortion in the state of Mississippi, legally, without having to--  Roe vs. Wade. So we've done that. I was proud of it. The governor signed it into law. And of course, there you have the other side. They're like, 'Well, the poor pitiful women that can't afford to go out of state are just going to start doing them at home with a coat hanger.' That's what we've heard over and over and over.

 

"But hey, you have to have moral values. You have to start somewhere, and that’s what we've decided to do. This became law and the governor signed it, and I think for one time, we were first in the nation in the state of Mississippi."

 

Not in the US, of course, but rather in Malaysia. The verdict, which was unanimous, found Georege W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Alberto Gonzales, David Addington, William Haynes, Jay Bybee, and John Woo guilty of torture and cruel and inhumane treatment.

Now the Malaysian government is sending out full transcripts of the trial to the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court. Copies will also be sent to the United Nations as well as the Security Council. While the US is of course not bound by Malaysian law, it is subject to international law.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out across the world. Back in February, George W. Bush canceled a trip to Switzerland, out of fears of legal persecution.

I've been sorting through my boxes of books, re-organizing them to be put into different boxes. Some of these books are going to be proudly displayed on our (very limited) bookshelves. The others are to be boxed up and put into the storage unit, until the day arrives we have space for all our books.

Surprisingly, for someone that claims not to like fiction, it seems like an awful lot of fiction is going into the "bookshelves" pile.

This is one of the piles of books that get to be shelved.
